You do not always need a plane ticket or a long drive to make a weekend feel worthwhile.
Sometimes the best Saturday starts at a farmers market in Easton. Another weekend might mean walking beside Bethlehem's historic blast furnaces, catching a baseball game in Allentown, visiting a winery, or spending a few hours on a wooded trail.
That variety is one reason living in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley can feel different from simply owning a house here. Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, and the surrounding communities put recreation, history, food, culture, and outdoor activities within the same region.
After working in Lehigh Valley real estate since 1990, I have learned something important: people rarely make housing decisions based only on bedrooms, bathrooms, and square footage. The way you want to spend your time matters too.
Here are 10 ideas worth putting on your weekend list.
Lehigh Valley offers indoor attractions, outdoor recreation, entertainment, history, local food, and seasonal activities. Your weekend can be as active or relaxed as you want it to be.
1. Spend a day at Dorney Park
Dorney Park in Allentown is one of the region's best-known attractions, with roller coasters, rides, children's attractions, and Wildwater Kingdom during its operating season.
It is an easy choice when you want a full day of activity without traveling far from the Lehigh Valley. Because operating dates and hours vary seasonally, check the park calendar before heading out.
2. Get creative at Crayola Experience in Easton
Rainy weekend? That does not have to cancel your plans.
Crayola Experience in downtown Easton features four floors and more than 20 hands-on attractions. Visitors can create personalized crayons, make melted-wax art, work on creative projects, and take part in interactive activities. The attraction recommends allowing roughly three to four hours for a visit.
3. Spend Saturday morning at Easton Farmers' Market
A good weekend does not have to be complicated.
Easton Farmers' Market dates to 1752 and describes itself as the country's oldest continuously operating open-air market. During its regular season, the market takes place Saturdays at Scott Park along the riverfront and features locally grown and produced goods.
Pick up something fresh, grab something to eat, and spend some time downtown.
4. Walk the Hoover Mason Trestle in Bethlehem
Want to understand Bethlehem beyond what you see from the road?
The Hoover Mason Trestle gives visitors a close look at the former Bethlehem Steel site. The elevated pedestrian walkway runs beside the historic blast furnaces and includes interpretive information explaining the area's steelmaking past.
Pair the walk with time at the nearby SteelStacks campus, which hosts entertainment and community programming throughout the year.
5. Visit Lehigh Valley Zoo
Lehigh Valley Zoo in Schnecksville is another weekend option when you want to spend time outside.
Its location also makes it easy to pair a zoo visit with nearby Trexler Nature Preserve. The zoo is located at 5150 Game Preserve Road in Schnecksville.
Check the zoo's current calendar before visiting, since hours and programs can change by season.
6. Hike or bike at Trexler Nature Preserve
If your ideal weekend involves trails rather than traffic, put Trexler Nature Preserve on your list.
The 1,108-acre public preserve has more than 18 miles available for activities including hiking, walking, jogging, mountain biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Trail choices range from shorter, easier routes to the challenging 8.5-mile Trexler Border Trail.
Local tip: Choose your trail based on distance and difficulty before arriving rather than deciding at the trailhead.
7. Go underground at Lost River Caverns
Some of Lehigh Valley's most interesting scenery is beneath your feet.
Lost River Caverns in Hellertown offers guided walking tours through a natural limestone cavern with an underground river. Tours generally run 30 to 45 minutes, and reservations are required.
It is an especially useful option when you want something different from the usual restaurant, movie, or shopping routine.
8. Visit America On Wheels in Allentown
Cars can tell you quite a bit about American history.
America On Wheels in Allentown focuses on transportation history through vehicles and hands-on exhibits. The museum is located at 5 North Front Street and is currently open Wednesday through Sunday, with weekend hours on both Saturday and Sunday.
For automobile fans, history fans, or anyone looking for an indoor weekend activity, it is worth knowing about.
9. Spend an afternoon at a Lehigh Valley winery
Lehigh Valley is a federally designated American Viticultural Area, or AVA. The regional wine area includes more than 30 wineries and more than 230 planted acres, according to Discover Lehigh Valley.
That gives you plenty of choices for a slower Saturday or Sunday afternoon.
Before visiting, confirm each winery's current tasting policies, reservations, events, and operating hours.
10. Catch a game at Coca-Cola Park
When baseball is in season, a Lehigh Valley IronPigs game at Coca-Cola Park gives you another reason to spend an evening in Allentown.
The ballpark opened in 2008 and serves as the home of the IronPigs as well as a site for community events and other gatherings.
Check the current schedule before making weekend plans.
Where you live affects how you use your time.
A home may meet every requirement on paper, but the surrounding area still shapes your daily routine. Access to parks, entertainment, restaurants, cultural sites, major routes, and community amenities can influence whether a location works for your long-term plans.
That matters whether you are:
Selling a current property and considering your next move
Moving into a larger home
Downsizing into something more manageable
Buying your first property
Reviewing real estate as part of an investment strategy
The right real estate decision starts with more than asking, "What can I buy?"
A better question is: "What do I want my life here to look like?"
Local knowledge adds context to the numbers.
I have served buyers, sellers, and investors throughout Lehigh and Northampton Counties since 1990, with more than 2,000 closed properties. My background in real estate, business management, architecture, construction, property management, and brokerage gives me a practical perspective when evaluating a property and the market around it.
For sellers, that means understanding how pricing, presentation, timing, and location affect a property's position in the market.
For buyers and investors, it means looking beyond the listing sheet and considering how a property fits both current goals and long-term plans.
The house matters. The strategy behind the decision matters just as much.
Maybe a weekend around Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, Northampton, Emmaus, Nazareth, Whitehall, or Saucon Valley has you thinking differently about where you want to live.
Or maybe you already own property here and are wondering what today's market means for your equity and next step.
That is the right time to get facts before making assumptions.
